Seed Germination Stage: Light Fertilization to Promote Germination and Lay a Growth Foundation

A large amount of fertilizer is not required during seed germination, as the nutrients stored in the seeds themselves can meet the initial needs. Excessive fertilization may instead burn the radicle and affect germination. If the soil for planting has poor fertility, a small amount of well-rotted organic manure (such as sheep manure or chicken manure) or low-concentration balanced compound fertilizer (NPK 20:20:20) can be applied before sowing, and evenly mixed into the top 10-15 cm of the soil.
The role of these fertilizers is to release nutrients slowly, providing gentle nutritional support for seed germination. The nitrogen element promotes the elongation of the hypocotyl, while the phosphorus element enhances the vitality of the radicle, helping the seeds break through the seed coat and take root in the soil more quickly. At the same time, this avoids root damage caused by a sudden increase in nutrients. It should be noted that the amount of fertilizer applied at this stage is only 1/3 of the conventional amount, and the distance between the fertilizer and the seeds must be at least 5 cm to prevent direct contact.
Seedling Stage: Nitrogen-Rich Fertilizer as the Main Choice to Strengthen Branches and Leaves

After the seedlings emerge from the soil, they enter a stage of rapid growth. At this point, the core need is to promote the growth and development of branches, leaves, and roots. Nitrogen-rich fertilizers with low phosphorus and potassium are the best choice, such as urea (nitrogen content 46%), leachate of well-rotted soybean cake fertilizer, or water-soluble fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 3:1:2.
Nitrogen is a key component of chlorophyll and protein in plants. It can accelerate the growth of seedling leaves, enabling them to form a "nutrient factory" for photosynthesis more quickly. At the same time, it promotes root branching and enhances the ability to absorb water and nutrients. When fertilizing, the principle of "dilute fertilizer applied frequently" should be followed. Fertilize once every 10-15 days, and control the concentration at 0.1%-0.2% (e.g., 1-2 grams of fertilizer per liter of water). If the seedlings have yellow leaves and slow growth, the frequency of fertilization can be appropriately increased, but high concentration should be avoided to prevent leaf burn.
Vegetative Growth Stage: Balanced Fertilization to Balance Branches, Leaves and Roots

When plants have more leaves and thicker branches, they enter the vegetative growth stage. At this time, it is necessary to balance the growth of branches, leaves, and roots. Balanced compound fertilizer (with an NPK ratio of 2:1:1 or 1:1:1) is the most suitable, and it can be combined with a small amount of well-rotted organic fertilizer (such as compost or bone meal).
Nitrogen continues to support leaf photosynthesis to ensure nutrient accumulation; phosphorus promotes further expansion of the root system and enhances the plant's absorption capacity; potassium improves the plant's stress resistance and reduces the occurrence of diseases and pests. The frequency of fertilization at this stage can be adjusted to once every 20-30 days, and the amount of fertilizer should be increased by 50% compared with the seedling stage, but excessive fertilization still needs to be avoided. For foliage plants, the proportion of nitrogen can be appropriately increased to make the leaves greener and thicker; for woody plants, the proportion of phosphorus and potassium can be increased to lay a foundation for subsequent flowering and fruiting.
Flowering and Fruiting Stage: Phosphorus and Potassium-Rich Fertilizer as the Main Choice to Promote Abundant Flowers and Plump Fruits

After entering the flowering and fruiting stage, the nutritional needs of plants change. The core goal is to promote flower bud differentiation and improve the fruit set rate. At this time, phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizers (with an NPK ratio of 1:3:2 or 1:2:3) are mainly used, such as monopotassium phosphate (phosphorus and potassium contents are 52% and 34% respectively), superphosphate, and well-rotted plant ash.
Phosphorus can accelerate flower bud differentiation, making the flowers larger and more colorful, while extending the flowering period; potassium promotes fruit development, increases fruit sweetness, and reduces fruit drop and cracking. The timing of fertilization must be accurately controlled: start fertilizing 1-2 weeks before flowering, once every 10-15 days, and apply continuously 2-3 times; after fruit setting, the frequency can be appropriately reduced, fertilizing once every 20 days or so until one month before the fruits ripen. It should be noted that nitrogen fertilizer application should be reduced or suspended at this stage to avoid excessive growth of branches and leaves competing for nutrients, which may lead to fewer flowers and small fruits.
In short, the core of plant fertilization lies in "supplying on demand". By selecting the right fertilizer according to the nutritional needs of different growth stages and controlling the amount and frequency of fertilization, plants can maintain the best growth state at each stage and show vigorous vitality.
